Immaculata Symphony Presents Annual Fall Concert

Musicians playing in orchestra

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Immaculata Symphony will perform its fall concert, “Transformations,” beginning at 7 p.m. in Immaculata’s Alumnae Hall. The Immaculata Symphony is a university-community organization, with a long and outstanding tradition that goes back to the University’s founding in 1920.

Works originally composed for piano are transformed in these full orchestral arrangements, breathing new life into the compositions. One of the most famous of the new arrangements is Maurice Ravel’s transcription of “Pictures at an Exhibition,” composed for piano by Modest Mussorgsky in 1874. However, most audiences are more familiar with Ravel’s 1922 adaptation for orchestra. In addition to several smaller works that will be featured, Immaculata’s music director, Joseph Gehring, created an orchestra arrangement for Bach’s “Little’ Fugue in G. minor that will be performed during the concert.

Music Director Joseph Gehring, M.M., will be conducting the orchestra for this performance. Gehring is the chair of the Immaculata University Music Department and serves as an assistant professor and director of ensembles. Gehring has been involved with the Immaculata Symphony since 2004 and was appointed music director in 2011. In addition to his role with Immaculata, he serves as the music director of the West Chester Band and is a member of the Chesco Pops Orchestra. Gehring frequently directs various honor and festival bands throughout the Pennsylvania and Delaware area.

General admission to the fall concert is $15 and $12 for senior citizens. Students and children are free. Tickets are available on the night of the event and online at www.immaculatasymphony.org.
