Mighty Macs Reunite to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of First National Championship

Members of Immaculata University’s three national championship women’s basketball teams reunited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first national title, won on Sunday, March 19, 1972.

Coach Cathy Rush, whose record was 149-15 with the Mighty Macs, addressed her former players and other special guests from the Immaculata community including the current women’s basketball team, winners of the Atlantic East Conference this year. Tim Chambers, director of “The Mighty Macs” movie, also spoke to the crowd about his experience filming the movie and the immortality of what the Mighty Macs accomplished.

In a recorded video, “Good Morning America” News Anchor Robin Roberts, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, CBS-3 Anchor Ukee Washington and former Queens College women’s basketball coach Lucille Kyvallos were among those who paid tribute to the legendary teams. In addition, the girls’ basketball teams of Cardinal O’Hara, Villa Maria Academy, and Monsignor Bonner/Archbishop Prendergast high schools also sent congratulatory messages as well as Immaculata faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends. To commemorate the special occasion, a one-of-a-kind word art piece, designed by Philadelphia sports artist, Dan Duffy, was presented to each Mighty Mac.[/two_third]
