IU 2025 Graduate Profile: Catherine Kelly, M.S.N.

Catherine Kelly

Catherine Kelly ’10, a seasoned nurse with nearly two decades of experience, faced a life-altering challenge while pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) degree from her undergraduate alma mater, Immaculata University. In the fall of 2023, during her second semester in the program and while completing her clinical practicum, Kelly was diagnosed with breast cancer. Though the intensity of her treatments nearly caused her to abandon her dream of achieving an advanced nursing degree, Kelly’s determination kept her going until graduation in May 2025. Despite the shock and overwhelming emotions, she refused to let her diagnosis derail her studies.

“I was shocked, scared and overwhelmed by my diagnosis,” Kelly recalled. “But I was also determined not to let it define me or stop me from achieving my goal.”

Though undergoing rigorous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Kelly remained committed to her coursework, finding that the flexibility of online courses provided her with the opportunity to stay engaged with her studies while managing her health. As a dedicated administrative supervisor at Temple University Hospital, wife, mother and student, Kelly’s unwavering resilience was strengthened by the steadfast support of her family, friends, and professors, who guided her through the toughest moments when the toll of the treatments made her question whether she could continue.

“I experienced some complications through my treatment and a few times…there were times I considered withdrawing from the program. The treatments were incredibly intense, and it felt overwhelming. But the support and encouragement from my family, friends, professors and cohort members were essential. My husband and children were my greatest motivation, helping me stay focused and determined,” she shared. She worked with her professors to create a plan that ensured that she could successfully complete her courses.

Kelly’s weekly clinical experience for her classes became a highlight, offering a positive distraction from the stress of treatment. “I looked forward to it every week. It helped me cope during such a difficult time, and I was able to complete my clinical practicum prior to receiving chemotherapy and radiation,” she said.

Despite the obstacles, Kelly’s passion for nursing never waned. Her career in the field has always been driven by a desire to make a positive impact on others. From her start in a hospital lab office—where she was inspired by the compassionate care nurses provided—to her current role as an administrative supervisor at Temple, Kelly has always been focused on improving patient outcomes, particularly in cardiac care.

Building on that commitment to growth and improvement, the decision to return to Immaculata University to pursue her M.S.N. was easy. “The flexibility of the online courses allowed me to balance my education with my work and family life. I really appreciated the camaraderie and support within my cohort,” she said.

Kelly’s experience battling cancer and her pursuit of an M.S.N. at Immaculata University have shaped her vision for the future. Kelly plans to become a nurse educator, hoping to inspire and support others just as she was supported. “My experience as a patient has enhanced my professional nursing practice,” she explained. “I want to provide that same kind of support to my future students and fellow nurses.”

Kelly’s journey is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. For those considering returning to school or completing a degree, her advice is clear: “Go for it! Set your goal and positive intention. Believe in yourself. When things get tough, remember your motivation and who inspires you.”
