Students Participate in Disaster Simulation

An infected USB drive and illegal drones led to a simulated act of industrial sabotage during the May Day exercise held on campus. The disaster simulation brought together students from Emergency Planning & Management, Cybersecurity, and Supply Chain Management classes to resolve a complex incident.

When the sabotage ignited a large fire at a fictional industrial site, students from an EPM and a Homeland Security class operated an Incident Command Post (ICP) to manage first responder resources, inform the public, and account for plant employees.

The PA Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) provided a mobile communications truck that was used as the ICP. They also coordinated with Cybersecurity students who were working to resolve the hack and regain control of the industrial control system; if they could not, the situation would get worse. Simultaneously, SCM students acting as plant management, dealt with the interruption of the plant’s operations and brainstormed solutions to get it back in operation. Three EPM seniors served as exercise controllers driving the flow of the simulation by sending messages to the ICP. Everyone agreed that it was a great way to end the semester!
