Tips for New Students
Welcome to Immaculata. We look forward to seeing you on campus in August.
Top Ten Tips for Academic Success as a First Year Student
- It’s okay (even good!) to be nervous. That shows you want to do well and are ready to embark on a positive new journey. Channel any extra nervous energy into planning for your academic journey ahead.
- Purchase your books before the first week of classes.
- College is different than high school. You will be in class less but need to study on your own more.
- Depending on your major, you will be in class approximately 15 hours a week. For every hour in class, you should plan to study at least 2 hours outside of class. That means 30 hours of study/reading/homework time a week.
- Much of the learning will be independent and outside of the classroom; but you don’t have to do it alone! Make connections with your peers for study groups, communicate with your professors and attend office hours and seek tutoring or coaching for academic support.
- Ask for help early. Figure out who your support system is.
- If you are planning to work while in school, we recommend working only between 10-15 hours per week during your first semester. And then no more than 20 hours per week after that. Let your employer know that academics are your priority, and there may be times you need to reduce your hours during the semester.
- Make sure you have reliable access to technology.
- You now have an Immaculata email. Please check it regularly. This will be the primary mode of communication that professors and staff will use to reach you.
- Purchase a planner. Review your syllabi when you get them at the start of each class and write down important dates and deadlines in your planner.
- Go to Class! Regular attendance in class is crucial to your success!
- Get involved! Join one of IU’s many clubs and organizations early on to make connections. During the semester, review the Dome Digest every week to learn about the many on-campus events and services offered to our students!
