Technology Minors

Computational Sciences

The computational sciences minor will help you strengthen your analytical skills through the use of data and algorithms. If you want to be a scientist, a medical provider or any other professional who needs to analyze information, this minor will help you develop a marketable set of skills that complements your major.

You will take two calculus courses, and you can choose from electives in statistics, database, computer programming and data analysis. This minor gives you the flexibility to develop your skill set based on your academic and career interests.

Cybersecurity

The 18-credit minor in cybersecurity will help you diversify your skills to enter a fast-growing field. Any organization that is connected to the internet could be targeted by cybercriminals. The demand for cybersecurity professionals currently outpaces the supply, and in-depth technical expertise is not a requirement for working in this field. The field needs professionals with diverse skills who can assess risks, train employees to take proper security measures, and develop strategies to address ongoing threats.

If you are majoring in another discipline, minoring in cybersecurity will help you protect your organization from cyber intrusions. For example, a cybersecurity minor can help criminology majors prepare for investigating criminal activity online, and the minor can help business majors prepare to work with their network security teams. Having an understanding of cybersecurity will benefit you in any field that uses computer networks.

This program, offered fully online, or with the option to take some face-to-face courses, will give you a foundation in computer programming, web design basics, information security, network defense, intrusion detection, high-tech crime, cyberwar and international affairs.

Data Analytics Foundation

A data analytics foundation minor will equip you with the programming and database skills that are foundational for data science and analytics. This minor, while similar to the business analytics minor, focuses on the technical skills you need to build computer applications that analyze information. These technical skills will complement your major and set you apart in the job market as a professional who can use the power of data to help your organization make better decisions.

In this 18-credit minor, you will learn to apply critical thinking, mathematics, algorithms, and models to analyze and interpret information. You will practice accurate, effective oral and written communication, informed by careful reasoning and critical thinking. You will be prepared to evaluate advances in computing and data science to design, implement, test and apply creative analytical solutions.

Digital Forensics

Enter the emerging field of digital forensics with Immaculata’s new minor. Digital forensics involves analysis of evidence that exists in digital form such as hard drives, emails and network activity. This minor, with classes offered via all learning formats, can be added to several bachelor programs, including criminology, sociology, cybersecurity, computer science and political science.

The lack of qualified professionals in this field makes adding the 19-credit minor beneficial. Successful completion of the minor prepares students for the ACE certificate in digital forensics that enhances job prospects. Topics covered in the minor focus on digital investigations with identification, preservation, examination, analysis and reporting.

Information Systems

With a minor in information systems, you will be prepared to use computer applications and data to solve everyday problems. Your courses will introduce you to software design and programming, algorithm design, data modeling, data architecture, usability and accessibility, and human-computer interaction.

Interactive Digital Media

This minor blends graphic design, computer science, and communications to help you create digital media experiences that are both functional and engaging. You will develop your artistic, technical, and digital communication skills through hands-on projects, such as designing, implementing, and testing web-based applications, and using your creativity to produce multimedia presentations.

Mathematics

As a math minor, you will study calculus and discrete mathematics fundamentals. You can customize your minor by choosing upper-level courses that interest you, such as probability and statistics, numerical analysis, differential equations, modern algebra, linear algebra, or modern geometry.
