Education Minors
Communication Disorders
Immaculata’s minor in communication disorders provides an overview of normal and disordered speech, language and hearing across the life span. Prepare for a graduate degree in speech-language pathology or audiology, or use your knowledge to enhance your career prospects in special education, disability services or health and social sciences in settings such as schools, intermediate units, hospitals or rehabilitation centers.
- Discover the anatomy and physiology of speech, hearing and swallowing mechanisms.
- Study language development from birth to adulthood and related cognitive, physical, social, cultural and environmental factors.
- Learn about English speech sounds and the acoustic and articulatory properties of languages.
- Understand ethical and professional techniques for hearing assessment and the impact of hearing loss.
This minor complements various majors, including education, nursing, allied health, psychology and communication. Take interdisciplinary coursework and participate in at least 25 hours of clinical observation to gain experience with people from diverse cultural backgrounds or with a range of special needs.
Education
The goal of the education minor is to offer students a fundamental understanding of the field of education. Students who are interested in teaching at any grade level, counseling, training, cognitive therapy, and curriculum development would be interested in the education minor. All education minor coursework may be used to satisfy Pennsylvania Department of Education certification requirements; students may apply to the teacher education program or utilize the coursework towards a post-baccalaureate certification.
