What do Mission and Ministry Mean?

Dear Immaculata Community,

“How do we understand mission today? The witness of a Christian life is the first and irreplaceable form of mission, and such witness includes a commitment to peace, justice, human rights, and human promotion. Pope Paul VI drew the definition of mission from the central message and explicit purpose of Jesus to preach the good news of the kingdom or reign of God and pointed out that mission has many elements. It must respect the culture and the context and does not always require words.

This last idea is captured nicely by the phrase associated with St. Francis of Assisi “preach always and if necessary, use words!” One can say that mission is proclaiming, serving, and witnessing to God’s reign of love, salvation, and justice.”
