Writing Sessions

What is a Writing Session?

Writing sessions are held in the Writing Center for students who take classes on campus.  Writing sessions consist of either one half-hour or two half-hour consultations with a writing assistant (WA).

If you have a three-page paper, one half-hour session usually is sufficient. If your paper is seven pages, two half-hour sessions would work.  If your paper is longer than seven pages, you should plan to sign up for several sessions on different days to allow for your revision process.

Writing sessions are effective in helping students with the planning, drafting and revising stages of their writing. Writing sessions help students to learn more about their writing process.

A writing session is about describing an effective process, not prescribing the product.  We help students to make an informed effort to produce more effective texts.

Writing sessions give students the opportunity to express their concerns, ask questions, and/or make comments about their writing. Writing assistants aim to provide significant feedback during the writing session.  The Writing Center is not a proofreading or editing service.

As students of higher learning, you should use a writing handbook and the manuals for APA, MLA, and/or Chicago style.  These texts contain rules for grammar, formatting, and documentation for your particular discipline.

How to Sign Up for a Writing Session

Write your name on our sign-up sheet on the bulletin board outside the door of 103 Loyola Hall or call ext. 3494 during Writing Center hours and ask a WA to sign up for you. Two sign-up sheets are available on the bulletin board at all times: one for the present week and one for the following week.

Walk-ins are welcome if another student is not signed up at the time you arrive and if a WA is available at that time to conduct a writing session.

If you sign up for a session and cannot make it, please either cross out your name or call during Writing Center hours to cancel.

Things to bring with you when you visit our center for writing assistance:

  • Any work you have already completed
  • Your writing assignment
  • Your flash drive
  • Your ideas and questions about your writing assignment
  • Any feedback you have received from your teacher about your writing

We look forward to working with you! ~ IU Writing Center
