TWO IMMACULATA UNIVERSITY GRADUATE STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NURSING

Two Immaculata University students, enrolled in the College of Graduate Studies´ Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program, have received the first Annual Independence Blue Cross Nurse Scholars Program scholarships. Beth Chiatti of Blue Bell, PA and Mary Mabry of Gordonville, PA, each received $4,200 toward tuition and texts.
The intent of the scholarship is to encourage students to pursue a graduate degree in nursing that will qualify them to become a nurse educator. Immaculata University is the second largest provider of nurse graduates in the state of Pennsylvania.
"The Department of Nursing and I are very excited about having the opportunity to provide students with additional funding to complete their graduate work," states Jean Klein, M.S.N. D.N.Sc, RNCS, director of the graduate nursing department.
Eight students applied for the scholarship and each had to write a 2-3 page essay on "The Role of Nursing Educators in the 21st Century." To meet the criteria for the scholarship, the two scholarship recipients must enroll in a minimum of nine credits over the course of the 2004-2005 academic year.
Beth Chiatti, who is a nurse at Madison Avenue Elementary School, comments that, "I am honored and grateful to receive this scholarship from Independence Blue Cross and commend them on their support of nursing education. This scholarship will enable me to advance my master´s education in order to be able to teach nursing from a cross-cultural perspective."
This is the first time Independence Blue Cross has offered this grant program with the funds administered through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation (PHEF). The PHEF is also offering additional grant money to undergraduate nursing students including students in Immaculata´s BSN program.
