William Carr, D.M.A., Steinway Artist and professor of music at Immaculata University, performed for the Philadelphia Art Alliances’ inaugural “Spring at the Mansion” event on Friday, May 3. Carr performed a variety of piano pieces from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the 2nd Floor of the Wetherill Mansion.

The Philadelphia Art Alliance celebrates cultural life in Philadelphia at its annual Wetherill Ball. The event celebrated the jewel of Rittenhouse Square, the Wetherill Mansion, home to the Philadelphia Art Alliance. The evening included cocktails, dinner and dancing and a silent auction. Proceeds from the event benefited the preservation and restoration of the Wetherill Mansion.

With a doctorate in piano and a master’s in international business relations from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Carr uses his unique training in both disciplines to offer corporate seminars on creativity to schools of business and to Fortune 500 companies. He has given these seminars at Columbia University, Dartmouth College, the Wharton School, and at more than 30 corporations in the U.S. and abroad. He has also presented at the American Society for Training and Development, the world’s largest association dedicated to workplace learning and performance professionals, and at the American Creativity Association, a forum that promotes creativity and innovation in a wide range of industries and disciplines.

Carr studied piano at the Juilliard School with Adele Marcus as well as at Temple University, and he earned his doctorate in piano at the Catholic University of America with Marcus. He continued his studies in Vienna and at the Munich Conservatory and the Liszt Conservatory in Germany. In 2005 he was named a Steinway Artist, a prestigious title that recognizes the most exceptional music performers in the world. He has taught at Immaculata for 20 years, and in 1998, he was honored as the first recipient of the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award.

Immaculata University and Jacobs Music Company are hosting a four-day All-Steinway Celebration from Thursday, June 7, through Sunday, June 10. To commemorate Immaculata’s All-Steinway School status, the famous Horowitz Piano (known as the CD 503 piano), which is touring the country, will arrive at Immaculata for a faculty concert featuring William Carr, DMA, Steinway Artist, and other Immaculata University music faculty members. In addition, 22 regional piano teachers will be bringing their students to perform on the Horowitz piano for a Perform-a-Thon, Children Helping Children, benefitting the Philadelphia Chapter of the Ronald McDonald House.

As one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) was a Russian classical pianist and composer. His personal touring Steinway Concert Piano (the CD 503) was used in his historic return to the Soviet Union to tour in 1986. In the new atmosphere of communication and understanding between the USSR and the USA, these concerts were seen as events of political as well as musical significance. Horowitz also used the CD 503 piano on his final album.

Details for the four-day event include:

Children Helping Children Perform-a-Thon (all students perform on the Horowitz Piano): Thursday, June 7, from 4 – 8 p.m.; Saturday, June 9, from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, June 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Immaculata University Faculty Concert on Friday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m., featuring William Carr, DMA, Steinway Artist, on the Horowitz Piano and the Immaculata Music Department faculty in Memorial Hall. The public is invited to attend.
