Sister Elizabeth Monica Acri, IHM, Psy.D., has joined Immaculata University’s Graduate Psychology Department as an assistant professor. Originally from the Harrisburg area, she is currently preparing classes on psychopathology and ethical and professional issues in psychology for the spring semester. She is also working with the doctoral internship program.

Before coming to Immaculata, she was a post-doctoral resident at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, where she supervised the outpatient dual diagnosis program and provided individual and group therapy for adults with addictions and mental illness. She has also served as a therapist and school counselor at various schools and behavioral health centers in the Philadelphia area.

In addition to school counseling, Acri is experienced in school administration, having served as the principal of Saint Veronica School, St. Peter School, Sacred Heart School, and Immaculate Heart Elementary School over the course of seventeen years. At each of these schools, she participated in their instructional services teams for counseling and psychoeducational referrals. She has also taught in the elementary school systems of the dioceses of Allentown, Pa., and Lima, Peru.

Acri holds two master’s degrees, one in bicultural and bilingual studies from Marywood University, and one in counseling psychology from Temple University. She earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from Immaculata in 2010 and is a licensed practitioner in Pennsylvania.

With regard to her research interests, she reported, “My most recent research was on multidisciplinary management of chronic pain, particularly in Pennsylvania nursing homes. I am very interested in the use of clinical hypnosis in the treatment of pain, trauma, and addictions, and I received my training in hypnosis through the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.” She has been a member of the Greater Philadelphia Society of Clinical Hypnosis and of the American Psychological Association’s Division 30, the Society of Psychological Hypnosis. She plans to continue her clinical work while teaching at Immaculata and to obtain certification in clinical hypnosis.

“I feel honored to be part of our full-time psychology staff and eager to give back to the school that has given so much to me,” Acri commented.

Immaculata University is offering a new 10-credit Organizational and Leadership Coaching program, with classes beginning in January 2013. Students will earn a stand-alone graduate certificate delivered through classes which are mostly face-to-face with some online interaction held one weekend per month. Nine of the 10 credits earned may be applied toward Immaculata’s Master of Arts in Organization Leadership.

Earning a certificate in coaching trains leaders to bring positive organizational change by improving their emotional and social skills, equipping them for strategic planning that results in better business outcomes, helping them engage and motivate employees, and guiding them in how to influence decision-makers.

This certificate program is intended to develop the leadership skills of professionals in a variety of fields, including performance managers who would like to get better at coaching their employees, other professionals in human performance, consulting, human resources, or executive administration.

“We are very excited about this new certificate program, one of the first leadership coaching programs offered by a university in the area,” said Janice Jacobs, Ph.D., chair of the Organization Leadership Department. “Coaches believe clients are naturally creative and resourceful so the process helps organizations and individuals develop more rapidly – providing more lasting results. We expect to be a boon to the local business community and look forward to reaching out to the Chester County business area.”

Among approximately 240 other Schweitzer Fellows from across the country, Hersh is the first Immaculata University student to be selected for the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. The Fellows will be conceptualizing and carrying out service projects that address the social determinants of health in underserved communities. As part of a new initiative at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, Hersh will help to increase awareness and educate the community about corporal punishment. Her project will build upon parents’ existing strengths and teach ways to diminish parent-child conflicts. She will provide both on-site, science-based parenting classes and individual parent guidance. Using a parent training model, she aims to teach parents to manage stress, reduce aggression, improve parent-child interactions, and bring about a positive family atmosphere.

Upon completion of her Fellowship year, Hersh will become a Schweitzer Fellow for Life and join a network of 2,500 individuals who are skilled in, and committed to, addressing the health needs of underserved people throughout their careers as professionals.
