OBITUARY:
SISTER CHRISTINE NOEL HENWOOD, IHM,
IMMACULATA UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH

Immaculata University Professor of English Sister Christine Noel Henwood, IHM, died on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, after a long illness. A respected and beloved educator, Sister Christine spent the last 22 years on the faculty of Immaculata University.
Sister R. Patricia Fadden, I.H.M., president of Immaculata University, says of Sister Christine, "Sister´s commitment to Immaculata University and to teaching was demonstrated throughout her life. Her loss will have an enormous impact on our university community and her students."
Born in Philadelphia, Sister Christine graduated from Haverford Senior High School in Havertown, PA. In 1968, Sister received a bachelor of science degree in Education from West Chester University. Shortly after graduation from West Chester University, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1969 and took her vows in 1972. Sister received her master of arts degree in English from Villanova University in 1973, and her PhD in Communication and Rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1995.
During her 22 years at Immaculata University, Sister was immersed in collegiate life as moderator of Cue and Curtain, the dramatic club at the university; assistant director of Children´s Theatre; moderator of Lambda Iota Tau, the English and Foreign Language Honor Society; director of the Act 101 Program (ADP); and moderator of The Immaculatan, the student newspaper.
Sister Christine held a number of administrative posts at the university including serving as chair of the English department for a number of years; a member of the Student Affairs Committee, the Liberal Arts Committee, the Admissions Committee, and the Academic Personnel Committee.
Prior to her arrival at Immaculata in 1982, Sister taught at Holy Trinity School, Morrisville, PA; St. Nicholas School, Weatherly, PA; Holy Name High School, Reading, PA; and Little Flower High School, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Sister Christine was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, The Rhetoric Society of America, and the Speech Communication Association. Sister presented at various professional conferences including the Conference on College Composition and Communication, Washington, DC; the Conference on College Composition and Communication, Nashville, TN; the Marist Conference on Women and Society, Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY; and the Conference of the Rhetoric Society of America, Minneapolis, MN.
Sister Christine was preceded in death by her mother and father, and by her brother Harry. She is survived by her brother, James Henwood, and a sister, Marianne Henwood, as well as a niece, nephew and four grandnieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 10, at Camilla Hall. Viewing will be held on Friday, July 9, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:15 p.m. at Camilla Hall, Immaculata, Pennsylvania.
Funeral arrangements are being made through DellaVecchia, Reilly, and Smith Funeral Home of West Chester.
