Somerdale, NJ Resident Sarah McClean is the Recipient of the Saint Catherine Medal from Immaculata University

Immaculata University announces that Somerdale, NJ, resident Sarah McClean is the recipient of the Saint Catherine of Alexandria Medal for the 2007-2008 academic year. The medal is sponsored by Kappa Gamma Pi, a national honor society for graduates of Catholic colleges. Sarah also recently was chosen to receive the Delaware Valley Education Consortium (DVEC) 2008 Hannah Amgott Memorial Scholarship. In addition, she earned first place in the Edith Garlow Memorial Poetry Contest.
Sarah, who will be entering her senior year at Immaculata, is a graduate of Pope Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, NJ. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Theology. This special medal is named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria, who symbolizes wisdom, fortitude, and Christian service. Kappa Gamma Pi offers the Saint Catherine Medal to honor a student at the conclusion of his/her junior year who represents the high ideas of a Catholic college education. One recipient is selected each year by the university faculty and/or classmates, on the basis of leadership and service to the affiliated institution. The DVEC Hannah Amgott Memorial Scholarship, a merit scholarship for students in Education, was created to reward students exhibiting excellence in the pursuit of education. Showcasing her literary talent, Sarah´s poem "I Thought I Heard" received first prize, worth $1,000, in the Edith Garlow Memorial Poetry Contest. Another of her poems, "Songs on a Stream" is scheduled to be published in the poetry anthology In Other Words.
As an active student at Immaculata University, Sarah is a Resident Assistant and works for the Office of Admissions helping with recruitment events. She is involved in various activities on campus including editor of Pilgrimages, the literary magazine; performer for several theatrical productions with Cue and Curtain; writer for the Immaculatan, the student newspaper; president of Alpha Psi Omega; president of the College of Undergraduate Studies Honor Society; vice president of Lambda Iota; treasurer for the Education Club; officer in the Immaculata student government; and mentor for the Immaculata Mac Mentors. She has made the Dean´s List every year, carrying a 3.97 GPA. She has also been invaluable as a volunteer for St. Cornelius CCD Program; the annual Stone Harbor Summer Convent Clean-up project; lector for Our Lady of Grace Church, and as a student assistant for the Duffy´s Cut archaeological excavation.
Immaculata University, a Catholic, coeducational institution, is located 20 miles west of Philadelphia, south of the intersection of route 30 and 352, between Paoli and Exton.
