Obituary: Sister Eileen F. Hughes, IHM
Sister Eileen Hughes, IHM (formerly Sister Eileen Immaculate) died at the age of 74 in Camilla Hall on Friday, February 13, 2009, after a short but serious struggle with metastasized melanoma. Prior to her illness, she had been serving as a tutor in the Math Center of Immaculata University where students quickly came to value her dynamic ability to convince them that "Math is beautiful".
Sister Eileen´s education career stretched from St. Andrew School, Drexel Hill, to Notre Dame High School, Moylan to Immaculata University. She obtained a Master´s degree in Mathematics from Villanova and a second Master´s degree in Counseling Psychology from Immaculata.
Of her 52 years as a Catholic educator, 48 of them were at the secondary education level. For most of those years she taught all levels of mathematics in the following high schools: Bishop Kenrick, Norristown; St. Katharine, Wayne; Archbishop Carroll, Radnor; and Cardinal Dougherty and St. Hubert, Philadelphia. In Notre Dame, Easton, and Villa Maria Academy, Malvern, she added math classes to the administrative roles of Director of Studies or Director of Guidance. At Villa Maria Academy over a span of 19 years, she became a recognized expert and guide for students aspiring to gain admission into many of the most esteemed institutions in the nation.
In 1997, Sister Eileen received the prestigious For God and Youth Award from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office for Youth and Young Adults in recognition of her service to the youth of the Archdiocese by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry. In particular, she had the ability to inspire and empower students to serve the marginalized and under-privileged in a variety of settings – a focus which remained with them long after they left school.
Sister Eileen is survived by her brother, Rev. James F. Hughes, and two sisters, Sister Agnes Hughes, IHM, and Dolores Curry.
