Immaculata University is pleased to announce that Sister Maureen Lawrence McDermott, IHM, Ph.D., current principal of Bishop Shanahan High School in Downingtown, PA, was appointed to the Board of Trustees for Immaculata University.  Sister Maureen will serve a three-year term.

“Serving on the Board of Trustees of Immaculata is a great honor since I am both a graduate of Immaculata and a member of the Congregation,” stated Sister Maureen.

               With over 30 years of experience teaching in local Catholic grade schools and high schools, Sister Maureen has served as principal of Bishop Shanahan since 2001.  During her tenure, the school has seen tremendous growth, academic development, and implementation of 21st Century education strategies of instruction.

               Earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Immaculata University, Sister continued her education receiving a Master of Arts in English from West Chester University and a Doctor of Philosophy from Fordham University’s Graduate School of Education.  In 2000, she received a Pennsylvania Principal’s Certificate.  As a leader in Catholic education, Sister Maureen has been invited to serve on several Philadelphia Archdiocesan committees including the Second Education Policy Committee, the Evaluation Subcommittee, and chairman of the Volunteers Committee for the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) Planning Committee.  She was also a member of the negotiations team for labor contracts for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.  From 1988 to 2006, Sister served on the Secondary Education Committee for the Immaculate Heart of Mary (I.H.M.) Congregation.  For over 20 years, she held leadership positions within the Philadelphia and the National Catholic Forensic League serving as president of the Philadelphia chapter from 1990-1992 and the national chapter from 1996-1998.

               Born and raised in Philadelphia, Sister entered the order in 1956 and took her final vows in 1987.

               Immaculata University’s Board of Trustees is comprised of both lay and religious leaders in the education and corporate community.  As the governing body of Immaculata, the Board understands, endorses, articulates, supports and promotes the mission of the University.
