Mighty Macs offshore race team wins second consecutive world championship
Immaculata University’s (IU) Mighty Macs-sponsored powerboat won its second consecutive Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) Class 5 World Championship when the world championship races were held in Jupiter, FL, October 19-21. IU’s team, racing under the name “The Mighty Macs,” consists of Throttleman Eddie Simmons and Driver Mark Henderson.
The race, the powerboat equivalent of the Indy 500, consisted of forty-three boats which competed in seven classes over a 5.5 mile oval loop a half-mile offshore between Carlin Park and Juno Beach Pier in Jupiter, FL. The boats, ranging from 24 to 50 feet in length, can reach speeds of up to 170 miles per hour.
“The sponsorship of Immaculata University’s offshore race team continues to make everyone at IU proud while also extending the Immaculata brand around the world,” commented Bob Cole, vice president for University Communications at Immaculata University. “It is a true honor to be the reigning world OPA champions for two consecutive years.”
The powerboat sponsorship is part of Immaculata’s aggressive, integrated branding campaign aimed at marketing the University to a wide range of target audiences and demographics, including recruiting more male students to the institution, which became coed in 2005.
