IU Student Selected for ITAA Design Exhibit

Philadelphia resident (19131) and Immaculata University student Chantel Morgan ’16 was selected from among 300 entrants to exhibit at the International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Design Exhibit.  The 2013 ITAA Annual Conference and Design Exhibit takes place October 15-18, in New Orleans.

Beginning her sophomore year at Immaculata, Morgan is a Fashion Merchandising major.  Her design that will be exhibited at ITAA, a jacket titled Near Zero Waste, was a project for a recycled clothing class that looked at various ways to implement sustainability into fashion design.  Intrigued by the idea of trying to reduce waste, the Near Zero Waste jacket was created by Morgan as a way of using leftover fabric from cut patterns.

Fabric for the jacket came from a sample that was donated from a mill that produces recycled textiles.  The fabric was draped and pinned to the form to create a silhouette of the jacket.  Then the jacket shape was cut and the leftover fabric from under the sleeve was used to drape the collar. The reverse of the fabric was used to construct the under-collar and cuff of the jacket, adding contrast and interest to the garment.  A belt was also created with left-over material.

The jacket, completed in April 2013, debuted at the Immaculata University Fashion Show this past May. Morgan selected recycled cotton with linen for the fabric using a draping method for designing the jacket utilizing the full yardage of the sample.  The overcast stitch was used to construct the jacket and as an embellishment along the outer edge of the center front, hem, and the collar.
