IU’s Mighty Macs Offshore Race team Wins World Championship
Immaculata University´s Mighty Macs-sponsored powerboat won the 2011 Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) Class 5 World Championship held in Orange Beach, Ala. earlier this month. The boat races under the name "The Mighty Macs."
IU´s race team, consisting of Throttleman Eddie Simmons and Driver Mark Henderson, will now compete in the unifying world championship race, the November Key West World Championships, sponsored by Super Boat International.
Super Boat International is the premier sanctioning body of offshore powerboat racing. The Key West World Championships are the powerboat racing equivalent of the Indy 500, with a 6.5 mile course through Key West Harbor, where boats can reach speeds of up to 170 miles per hour.
The Mighty Macs´ sponsorship of the offshore race team has been a win-win branding initiative for the University, the race team, and the Mighty Macs. "Immaculata University is so proud of Mark and Eddie," commented Bob Cole, vice president for University Communications at Immaculata University. "It is a true honor to be the reigning national and world OPA champions in the same year."
The powerboat sponsorship was part of Immaculata´s aggressive, integrated branding campaign aimed at marketing the University to a wide range of target audiences and demographics, including recruiting more male students to the institution, which went coed in 2005.
