Immaculata University Teams with BMD Performing Arts Center to Present Pre-College Music Camp

Immaculata University and BMD Performing Arts Center will come together to present a Pre-College Music Camp for gifted high school vocal and instrumental students. Selected as a PA Regional Summer School of Excellence Program, the camp will run from Monday, July 17, to Friday, July 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the campus of Immaculata University. Tuition for the full two-week program is $550.
This audition-only program is offered to students entering the ninth grade or higher as of Fall 2006 in any school in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery or Philadelphia counties. Homeschool students may also apply. Instruments appropriate to the program include band and orchestra string, wind and brass instruments, as well as piano, organ, harpsichord, guitar and percussion.
The program is led by such accomplished university educators as: Dr. Victor Vallo, professor of music and chair of the department of music at Immaculata University, Dr. Debra Torok, a renowned concert pianist known for her critically acclaimed recordings of the complete piano works of Pulitzer and Emmy Award winning composer Norman Dello Joio; celebrated tenor Paul Spencer Adkins, winner of tge First Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition and first vocal director for Peter Nero and The Philly Pops Voices of the Pops.
"As an experienced university teacher, I constantly see students who are gifted as instrumentalists or vocalists," says Torok, "but who are inadequately prepared with the essential music fundamentals to enable them to be successful musicians."
The camp will provide training in the components essential for well-educated musicians, including daily instruction in music theory and musicianship appropriate for their skill level. Students will learn how to prepare an artistic resume, choose audition repertoire, perform mock auditions, and be introduced to techniques designed to relieve performance anxiety. Vocal students will take part in small ensembles for opera and musical theater scenes. Instrumental ensembles will be divided into strings, keyboard, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
All applicants must complete an application form and provide a letter of recommendation from a school or private teacher. Students must also submit a sample of their work, lasting no longer than ten minutes, on a CD or an audio cassette tape, or schedule a live audition by calling 610-363-8677. Applicants to the Pre-College Music Camp will receive mailed notification of their acceptance.
For an additional fee, students may also schedule private lessons with faculty after 3:00 p.m. Funding for this program is provided in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Regional Summer Schools of Excellence (RSSE) Program, which is sponsored by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The RSSE is a summer enrichment program serving gifted students in K–12.
