Immaculata University Now Offers a BA in Music Performance

Immaculata University, expanding its excellence in the field of music, will offer a Bachelor of Arts in Music in Vocal or Instrumental Performance beginning with the Fall 2008 semester.
This new major will allow performance-oriented students who are interested in a liberal arts curriculum at a private institution to be able to study music performance. In addition, this new major will offer a specialized focus in both solo and ensemble performance experience that provides students many opportunities to develop their ability to perform at an advanced level in public. The students of this new major will have the opportunity to study with teachers who are performers of national and international prominence and who are selected by the Music Department because of their professional levels of pedagogical guidance and experience in performance.
In addition to the core undergraduate classes and required music courses, students enrolled in the Instrumental track will be instructed in Instrumental Literature and Performance Practices and Instrumental Pedagogy. Students in the Vocal track will learn Vocal Literature and Performance Practice and Vocal Pedagogy/Diction II. Both the Vocal and Performance tracks require coursework in Chamber Ensembles in addition to completing a semester performance for each of their 8 semesters with coaching by applied music faculty. At the end of the program, students present a Senior Recital.
Upon completion of the program, students should be able to demonstrate musical competence in area of specialization; hear, identify, and work conceptually with elements of music; understand the compositional process, aesthetic properties of style and how they shape artistic and cultural forces; apply knowledge of theory, ear-training, piano, sight-reading, musical styles, and improvisation; gain an acquaintance with selection of musical literature, the principal eras, genres, and cultural sources; understand the procedures for realizing a variety of musical styles; and improve skill development in solo and ensemble performance through participating in large and small ensembles. Students completing the BA in Music in Vocal or Instrumental Performance will be very well-prepared to continue graduate study in Music Performance and/or to establish a studio for private lessons.
The Music Department of Immaculata University also offers four other music degree programs including Bachelors of Arts in Music; Bachelor of Arts in Music with Certification in Elementary Education, Bachelor of Music in Music Education; and Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy.
"The Immaculata Music Department is poised and ready for this new major in music. This new B.A. in Music Performance will greatly enhance the entire music program at Immaculata with a Music Performance major that will enhance all of our other majors in music," commented Victor Vallo, Ph.D., professor of music and chair of Immaculata Music Department.
Immaculata University, a Catholic, coeducational institution, is located 20 miles west of Philadelphia, south of the intersection of routes 30 and 352, between Paoli and Exton.
