Immaculata Offers Certificate in Pope John Paul II Studies

The Department of Theology at Immaculata University offers a certificate program in John Paul II Studies. This program´s goal is to enrich understanding and appreciation of the global influence of John Paul II. Focusing on primary texts, students will investigate the life and theological thinking of John Paul II from a variety of perspectives.
Sister Sheila Galligan, IHM, S.T.L., S.T.D., professor of Theology at Immaculata University, comments that "Without doubt the abiding legacy of John Paul II is a cause for rejoicing! Immaculata´s new certificate program specifically hopes to introduce the men and women of the millennium to the treasure of John Paul II´s remarkable pastoral and theological vision."
The certificate consists of 18 credits; of those credits, half are required courses. Students enrolled in the certificate program take the following required classes:
Faith Alive: Catholic Belief and Practice (3 credits). This course seeks to examine the essential elements of the Catholic faith and to foster deeper understanding of the beliefs and practices which lie at the heart of the distinctively Catholic understanding of the Christian faith. It explores the "Four Pillars" of the Catholic faith upon which the Catechism of the Catholic Church is built.
John Paul II: A Remarkable Life (3 credits). This course will explore the life and legacy of John Paul II. Content will include perspectives on John Paul II´s personal witness, theological thinking, and the prophetic humanism that situates his teaching at the heart of Catholicism in the contemporary world.
Theology of the Body (3 credits). This course highlights the depth and richness of John Paul II´s integrated vision of the human person which has been named a "Theology of the Body." This course considers the specific ways that the human body, male and female, makes visible God´s invisible mystery and reflects God´s self-giving, creative love. Students will explore how human persons can fulfill the meaning of their existence by living according to the truth of the sexuality.
Students may also choose three classes from the following list:
Insights and Images: Mary Rediscovered (3 credits)
The Gospel of Life (3 credits)
Forgiveness (3 credits)
Recent Encyclicals: Catholic Social Teaching (3 credits)
Faith and Reason (3 credits)
