Immaculata Hosts Summer Math and Science Program

IMMACULATA UNIVERSITY HOSTS AREA TEACHERS FOR
MATH AND SCIENCE PROGRAM
In his Summit on Mathematics Education, February 2003, the U.S. Secretary of Education stressed America´s need for more scientists and mathematicians to continue to fuel technology innovation, health care, and education. Citizens must also develop a working knowledge of math and science so that they can participate in our increasingly sophisticated society. Quality math and science classes can make this happen, and from Monday, August 9, to Thursday, August 19, specialists gathered by the Chester County Intermediate Unit, including dedicated Immaculata University professors, will partner with sixty-six local middle school teachers as they work hard to improve their math and science programs.
The program will help teachers enhance their mathematics and science classes by integrating essential understandings with real-world, and out-of-this-world applications, courtesy of NASA scientists. Included among the middle schools taking part in the program are teachers from Philadelphia East, Coatesville, and Chester Upland School Districts.
This program, held at Immaculata University, has been generously funded through the FIMS (Fellowship in Math and Science) Grant, awarded to the Chester County Intermediate Unit under the Math/Science Partnership Initiative. Immaculata is the higher education partner helping to deliver the program. The program will take place from Monday, August 9, to Thursday, August 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Loyola Hall on the campus of Immaculata University. Each day will include intensive work in mathematics or science, classroom applications, and presentations by NASA scientists on how the material is used in the agency´s research.
Immaculata University, a Catholic liberal arts institution, is located 20 miles west of Philadelphia, south of the intersection of routes 30 and 352, between Paoli and Exton.
