Classical Indian Musician Performs at IU

Immaculata University’s Music Department will host a lecture-recital by Ustad Shafaat Khan, world-renowned Indian classical musician, on Wednesday, February 15 at 3:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Khan has performed worldwide at many prestigious concert halls, music festivals and universities all over India, America, Europe, China, Russia and Japan. In the rich history of Indian classical music, Khan has distinguished himself by being the first known artist to have attained simultaneous excellence in performing the sitar, surbahar and tabla.

Khan recently performed alongside Stevie Wonder at the Bonnaroo Festival, one of the largest music festivals in the United States. He has performed in almost all of the major cities in the U.S.  Through his music he has helped raise money for various charitable purposes including aid for flood victims, disabled children, battered women, and tsunami victims.

Khan has released three historic albums, produced by Dr. Deepak Chopra, in which he performed on the sitar/surbahar and accompanied himself on the tabla, a first in Indian classical music. He performed his own composition, “River of Strings,” at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia with a western Symphony Orchestra.
