What is Title IX?

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Sex discrimination includes sex-based harassment, discrimination on the basis of sex, and retaliation related to complaints of sex discrimination. Sex-based harassment is unwelcome conduct which includes both sexual harassment, including but not limited to sexual assault, other forms of sexual violence and other sexual misconduct, and gender-based harassment.

Any administrator, faculty member, student, staff, or applicant for employment or admission to the University, visitor, or third party who believes that he or she has been discriminated against on the basis of sex (including sexual harassment) or who has experienced an incident of sexual assault, sexual violence, or other sexual misconduct, may file a complaint with the Title IX Coordinator or Deputy Coordinator(s) as well as the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) in the U.S. Department of Education.

What is the Campus SaVE Act?

With the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in March of 2013, The Campus Sexual Violence Act (Campus SaVE) was amended as a federal law which requires colleges and universities to compile statistics on the number of incidents of dating violence, domestic violence, sexual violence and stalking reported to campus security authorities or local police agencies, in addition to crimes previously identified and included in the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

This means that colleges and universities must report incidents of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking; adopt certain student discipline procedures, such as for notifying purported victims of their rights; and adopt certain institutional policies and practices to address and prevent campus sexual assault, such as providing both awareness and prevention programming, including bystander intervention, to the campus community.
