5 Things Parents Should Know

  1. Helpful resources are readily available on campus. Encourage your child to seek help on his or her own, without your help. For health care concerns (illnesses and injuries), have your child call Student Health Services at ext. 3500.

  2. Students who are seen at Student Health Services are the controllers of their health information. Except in life threatening situations, Student Health Services cannot share health information with parents, friends, professors, or deans, without the students’ permission.

  3. Pennsylvania state law requires that students who attend a Pennsylvania college or university must provide documentation of certain immunizations endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American College Health Association. Students must submit certification of these immunizations prior to the start of classes. For more information, please see the Medical History/Pre-Entrance Form.

  4. Influenza vaccines are available in the fall each year through a clinic in the Bruder Center sponsored by Student Health Services. Look for the announcement on MyIU early in the fall. There is a small fee for this service that can be submitted to most major health insurance companies for reimbursement.

  5. We strongly encourage your student to have a small first aid kit. Some suggestions include band aids, antibiotic ointment, a thermometer and ibuprofen. Student Health Services does have some over-the-counter medications but is not open 24 hours a day.

For information about hours, making appointments with a doctor or nurse, and fees, please see our FAQs page. Learn about pharmacies in the area, including on-campus delivery of medications. If your child needs urgent care, please direct them to one of the local emergency rooms or clinics.
