IMMACULATA UNIVERSITY’S MIGHTY MACS OFFSHORE RACE TEAM WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN AMSOIL POWERBOAT SERIES SANCTIONED BY OPA

The Immaculata University (IU) Mighty Macs-sponsored powerboat is the 2011 Offshore Power Association (OPA) Class 5 National Champions.  The boat races under the name The Mighty Macs.

IU’s race team, consisting of Throttleman Eddie Simmons and Driver Mark Henderson, won the national championship and will now compete in the World Championship in Orange Beach, Alabama from October 6-9.

The Mighty Macs’ sponsorship of the offshore race team has been a win/win branding initiative for the University, the race team, and the Mighty Macs.  “To win the OPA Class 5 national championship during our first season as a sponsor greatly exceeds our expectations.  We give all the credit to Eddie and Mark,” commented Bob Cole, vice president for University Communications at Immaculata University.

The powerboat sponsorship was part of Immaculata’s aggressive, integrated branding campaign aimed at marketing the University to a wide range of target audiences and demographics including recruiting more male students to the institution which went coed in 2005.

Immaculata University is located 20 miles west of Philadelphia on the Main Line and is considered to be the birthplace of modern college women’s basketball. The Mighty Macs won the National Women’s College Basketball Championships in 1972, 1973 and 1974 (yearofthemightymacs.com).

The feature film, The Mighty Macs, which is based on Immaculata’s first national championship women’s basketball season, opens nationwide on October 21, and will have its world premiere on October 14, 2011 at the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall in Philadelphia, Pa.
