Immaculata's Psy.D. program has aims related to the acquisition and attainment of competencies in the following areas.

Aim 1: Psy.D. graduates will be competent practitioners of clinical psychology.

Intervention

Competencies:

1.      Learn multiple theoretical orientations.

2.      Develop and maintain effective relationships with recipients of services.

3.      Learn to develop evidence-based plans and intervention skills associated with theory and goals (with consideration to diversity and context).

4.      Modify and adapt evidence-based approaches when clear evidence is lacking.

5.      Apply literature to clinical decision-making.

6.      Apply and evaluate intervention appropriate to theory.

Assessment

Competencies:

1.      Learn to select, administer, score, and interpret cognitive, personality, and neuropsychological tests (with consideration to diversity and context).

2.      Develop and maintain effective relationships with recipients of services.

3.      Learn and apply differences between objective and subjective tests and measures.

4.      Learn and apply multi-method assessment.

5.      Learn diagnostic classification.

6.      Write integrative reports (e.g., background, results, diagnosis, recommendations).

7.      Communicate findings orally to different audiences (e.g. clients, supervisors, colleagues).

Individual and Cultural Diversity

Competencies:

1.      Acquire knowledge of diverse groups.

2.      Develop culturally informed helping skills.

3.      Apply culturally informed intervention and assessment strategies.

Ethical and Legal Standards

Competencies:

1.      Learn APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct.

2.      Acquire knowledge of relevant and governing laws, regulations, rules, and policies.

3.      Recognize ethical dilemmas and apply decision-making processes to resolve dilemmas.

4.      Conduct self in an ethical manner.

Supervision

Competencies:

1.      Demonstrate knowledge of supervision models and practices.

Consultation and Interdisciplinary Skill

Competencies:

1.      Demonstrate knowledge and respect for roles and perspectives of other professions.

Professional Values, Attitudes, and Behaviors

Competencies:

1.      Behave in ways that reflect the values and attitudes of psychology.

2.      Engage in self-reflection regarding personal and professional functioning.

3.      Engage in activities to improve performance.

4.      Actively seek and demonstrate openness and responsiveness to feedback and supervision.

5.      Respond professionally to increasingly complex situations with a greater degree of independence during training.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Competencies:

1.      Develop and maintain relationships with a wide range of individuals (e.g., colleagues, organization, supervisors).

2.      Produce and comprehend a wide range of communications (oral, non-verbal) that are informative and well-integrated.

3.      Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and ability to manage difficult communications.

 

Aim 2:  Psy.D. graduates will be knowledgeable in the area of scientific foundations and use this knowledge in practice.

Competencies:

1.      Learn and apply developmental stage theory.

2.      Learn and apply social psychology concepts.

3.      Learn history of psychology.

4.      Learn and apply biological bases of behavior.

5.      Learn and apply cognitive and affective bases of behavior.

6.      Learn and apply concepts of psychopharmacology.

7.      Learn and apply concepts of psychological tests and measurement.

 

Aim 3: Psy.D. graduates will be critical consumers of research and make a scholarly contribution to the profession.

            Research

Competencies:

1.      Demonstrate ability to independently formulate research or other scholarly activity.

2.      Conduct research or other scholarly activities.

3.      Critically evaluate and disseminate research or other scholarly activity.
