Program Overview

This program prepares students to provide counseling services and consultation for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. You will be instructed in ethical practice, social and cultural diversity, human growth and development, career development, and helping relationships. Classes will provide training in areas relevant to the professional discipline of mental health counseling, such as:

  • Group work
  • Assessment
  • Research and program evaluation
  • Diagnosis
  • Crisis intervention and trauma

This is a 72-credit program that meets the Pennsylvania Department of Education's requirements for school counselor certification as well as CACREP's (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) curriculum standards. The program is also in alignment with the requirements for Pennsylvania’s professional counselor licensure (LPC).

To earn your school counselor certification, you will need to successfully complete the required certification exams.

School Counseling PreK-12 is available as a stand-alone certificate for students who already hold a master's degree.
