B.A. in Education PreK-4 with Special Education PreK-8

Program Overview

In Immaculata's PreK-4 and Special Education PreK-8 major, you will explore categories of disabilities, legal issues, and methods for collaboration among all school personnel, families, students, and community programs. You’ll learn how to develop, implement, and manage individual education programs, and how to adapt your instruction to accommodate special needs students in an inclusive school setting. Courses also cover pedagogical techniques and progress monitoring.

The Education Division at Immaculata will help you understand professional standards and ethics in order to become a knowledgeable teacher. You will be encouraged to analyze educational issues, exemplify creativity in teaching, and practice Christian values.

All teacher education programs offered at Immaculata University have been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Our faculty members make every effort to help students prepare to teach in states other than Pennsylvania, although students are ultimately responsible for ascertaining the requirements of those states. Learn more about teacher certification.

The Education program includes a substantial experiential component: field experience during sophomore and junior year, and student teaching during senior year.  The director of student teaching coordinates all student teaching placement efforts and communicates with superintendents, assistant superintendents, human resource managers and principals on behalf of undergraduate students, adult undergraduates, and graduate students.

The program is designed to produce graduates who are proficient in:

  • Planning lessons that incorporate appropriate learning activities
  • Using various instructional strategies to support English language learners and special needs students
  • Managing the classroom and practicing reflective decision-making
  • Being responsive to the unique learning processes of individual students
  • Addressing educational issues in contemporary society

Students who graduate with certification and a minimum GPA of 3.5 may pursue a master's degree in the Educational Leadership program during a fifth year of study. For more information on this program, see the program goals and the administration or instructional track.
