Program Overview

Majoring in history at Immaculata will give you an understanding of the relationship of the past to the present, helping you comprehend the complexity of contemporary national and international issues.

You'll learn how to engage in historical research and interpretation, and you'll write a senior thesis for your capstone experience. You'll become knowledgeable about different historical periods, and you'll learn to make informed responses to the human condition and to appreciate the influence of the many cultures of our human heritage.

Our curriculum encompasses topical courses on a variety of historical subjects and intensive research seminars that will help you develop both factual knowledge about different historical periods and powerful intellectual skills. We offer small, engaging classes and rewarding internship opportunities that produce graduates who are well-prepared for the professional world.

Program Highlights

  • A variety of minors, including American and industrial archaeology, Middle East studies, military history, politics, and Irish studies
  • Access to local history, such as Revolutionary War battlegrounds, and Philadelphia's many museums and resources
  • Opportunities to participate in archaeological digs and receive training in imaging sub-surface objects, cleaning and preserving artifacts, as well as understanding their historical context
  • Opportunities to participate in the Alpha Alpha Rho Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the international honor society in history
  • Opportunities to present your senior seminar research at conferences and honor societies
  • Study abroad opportunities

HistoryThe 21st century will confront American society with a range of new challenges, while older issues will re-emerge. Your background in history will prepare you to analyze and address these challenges, making a direct impact on public policy.

Studying history can help you succeed in your chosen field by giving you excellent analytical and communication skills. Our graduates have been hired in a variety of arenas, from museums such as the Smithsonian Institution and the National Constitution Center, to secondary school classrooms, law offices, and branches of the U.S. government.

If you wish to be certified as a teacher, you will need to complete classroom observation and student teaching requirements and fulfill the requirements for teacher certification


In recent years, our students have held internships at the National Constitution Center, Winterthur Museum, local law offices, the Office of the Chester County Commissioners, the Juvenile Parole Office of Chester County, the Valley Forge National Historical Park, the Foreign Policy Research Institute, the Archaeological Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, the Narcotics Division of the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Learning Outcomes

When you successfully complete your history major at Immaculata, you will be able to:

  • locate historical evidence and evaluate its credibility
  • use historical sources, including primary documents, secondary interpretations, literature and art, and quantitative data
  • compare and contrast different interpretations offered by historians
  • evaluate major debates among historians
  • construct a written historical narrative integrating original research with existing literature
