Program Overview

With our partnership institutions, the Health Care Sciences and Services Department of Immaculata University offers a Bachelor of Science in Allied Health with a concentration in Respiratory Therapy. You will receive a strong science and liberal arts background from IU and clinical instruction and didactic coursework from affiliate institutions, which will prepare you for positions within the health care industry.

Career Potential

Respiratory therapists assist patients who have cardiopulmonary conditions, working at their bedsides to provide breathing treatments, perform diagnostic tests, interpret data, manage life support equipment and other related duties.

Respiratory therapists care for patients who have trouble breathing from, for example, a chronic respiratory disease, such as asthma or emphysema. They also provide emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, stroke, drowning, or shock.

Employment is expected to grow by 19 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. Growth in the middle-aged and elderly population will lead to greater demand for respiratory therapy services and treatments, mostly in hospitals and nursing homes.

To complete the program, you will take three years of allied health and liberal arts courses at Immaculata and then apply for the program at the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.

Upon completion of the program and successfully passing the certification exam, you are ready to assume entry-level responsibilities as a certified respiratory therapist (CRT). With training and certification, CRTs are eligible to sit for advanced level registered respiratory therapist (RRT) certification exams. Both exams are administered by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).  CRTs and RRTs must also successfully pass examinations to obtain licensure in individual states.
