Program Overview

With our partner institutions, the Health Sciences and Services Department of Immaculata University offers a Bachelor of Science in Allied Health with a concentration in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. You will receive a strong science and liberal arts background from IU and clinical instruction and didactic coursework from affiliate institutions, which will prepare you for positions within the health care industry.

Diagnostic medical sonographers use medical ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) to produce images of patients' internal structures. Sonographers help to diagnose a variety of conditions and diseases, as well as monitor fetal development. You may choose to specialize in general, cardiac, or vascular sonography.

Career Potential

Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to grow 39 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. As ultrasound technology evolves, it will become a more common method used to assist in diagnosing medical conditions, favored over more invasive procedures.

Employment opportunities are in areas such as hospitals, outpatient services, and physician offices. The core liberal arts preparation will also prepare you to assume a leadership position within a provider organization.

To complete the program, you will take three years of allied health and liberal arts courses at Immaculata. After your sixth semester, you may apply for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, or Thomas Jefferson University. Please note that Jefferson offers three different modalities within sonography: Cardiac Sonography, General Sonography, and Vascular Sonography.

Upon satisfactory completion of program requirements, you will be eligible to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (CAROMS) examinations in preparation for an entry-level position.
