Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Information Technology

Program Overview

We generate mountains of data from every click on our computers or tap on our phones. This kind of "Big Data" can provide valuable insights into people's behavior—if you know how to interpret it accurately.

Immaculata’s Bachelor of Science in Data Analytics will help you learn to collect, organize, and use data to provide organizations with meaningful, timely information. You will use algorithms, computer programming skills, and database systems to manage information, analyze it, and use it for strategic decision-making.

Data analysts require a versatile skill set that integrates subject matter knowledge, analytical thought, computing skills, and ethics. Business experts, computing professionals, and data scientists collaborate to build data systems, develop meaningful questions, query and analyze data to answer those questions, explain and visualize results, and use the results to strategize about future endeavors.

This program will help you cultivate systematic, orderly, and exact habits of thought to recognize patterns and solve problems. The program will also prepare you for a career in this growing field by laying a foundation in essential concepts and social ethics while preparing you to adapt to emerging trends and technologies.

Program Highlights

You can participate in professional and social activities, such as:

  • Opportunities for membership in professional organizations
  • Opportunities to participate in faculty-mentored research projects in data analytics and information technology. Recent student research projects have focused on big data, women in STEM fields, and cyberwarfare.
  • Trips to local conferences

Career Potential

More and more organizations—from retailers to hospitals to media companies—are looking for employees who can understand complex information and apply it to help them reach their organizational goals—from increasing sales to anticipating ER visits to tracking topical trends.

Data analysis skills are in high demand among employers and will open doors for you to work in a variety of areas, including industry, government, banking, business, or academia. Your degree will equip you to work in many industries in a number of careers:

  • Systems analyst
  • Database analyst/modeler
  • Software engineer/developer
  • Statistician
  • Researcher

Courses include:

  • Calculus I and II
  • Discrete Math
  • Probability & Statistics
  • Numerical Analysis
  • Linear Algebra
  • Operations Research
  • Introduction to Data Analytics
  • Storytelling with Data
  • Software Design and Programming I and II
  • Data and Information I and II
  • Data Structures
  • Technology and Ethical Issues
  • Senior Seminar

In your senior seminar course, you will write an in-depth research paper and presentation on a topic that interests you. You will apply data analytics concepts and skills to a specific discipline, allowing you to integrate your knowledge and enhance your abilities.

You may choose to complement your major with a minor in an associated field, such as biology, business, chemistry, finance, interactive digital media, or graphic arts.

You will complete a mentored professional internship that will help you apply your knowledge, gain experience, and prepare for a career in data analytics.
