Mary Elizabeth “M.E.” Jones, Ph.D.
Professor of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Information Technology

Program Overview

Immaculata’s Bachelor of Science in Data Analytics will help you learn to collect, organize, and use data to provide organizations with meaningful, timely information. You will use algorithms, computer programming skills, and database systems to manage information, analyze it, and use it for strategic decision-making.

Data analysts require a versatile skill set that integrates subject matter knowledge, analytical thought, computing skills, and ethics. Business experts and data scientists collaborate to develop meaningful questions, analyze data to find answers to those questions, explain and visualize results, and use the results to strategize about future endeavors.

This program will help you cultivate systematic, orderly, and exact habits of thought to analyze situations and solve problems. The program will also prepare you for a career in an evolving field by laying a foundation for lifelong learning, rooted in essential concepts and adaptable to emerging trends and technologies.

Program Highlights

You can participate in professional and social activities, such as:

  • Seminars led by mathematicians and data science professionals
  • Opportunities for membership in professional organizations
  • Opportunities to participate in faculty-mentored research projects in data analytics and information technology. Recent student research projects have focused on big data, women in STEM fields, and cyberwarfare.
  • Trips to local conferences

Career Potential

Data analytics is a growing field with career opportunities in many industries. Companies collect and store massive amounts of data describing customers, their preferences, and behaviors. Computing professionals build data collection and storage systems, and they provide tools that allow companies to query and analyze the data.

Majoring in data analytics will open doors for employment in a variety of areas, including industry, government, banking, business, or academia. Your degree will equip you to work in a number of careers:

  • Systems analyst
  • Database analyst/modeler
  • Software engineer/developer
  • Statistician
  • Researcher

Courses include:

  • Calculus I and II
  • Discrete Math
  • Probability & Statistics
  • Numerical Analysis
  • Linear Algebra
  • Operations Research
  • Introduction to Data Analytics
  • Storytelling with Data
  • Software Design and Programming I and II
  • Data and Information I and II
  • Data Structures
  • Technology and Ethical Issues
  • Senior Seminar

In your senior seminar course, you will write an in-depth research paper and presentation on a topic that interests you. You will apply data analytics concepts and skills to a specific discipline, allowing you to integrate your knowledge and enhance your abilities.

You may choose to complement your major with a minor in an associated field, such as biology, business, chemistry, finance, interactive digital media, or graphic arts.

You will complete a mentored professional internship that will help you apply your knowledge, gain experience, and prepare for a career in data analytics.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the ability to model, design, and implement structures supporting the effective and efficient storage and retrieval of data
  • Communicate, accurately and clearly, data as information in various digital, visual, and descriptive formats: pictorial, graphical, tabular, and textual
  • Demonstrate data analytical and decision-making skills through the application and interpretation of probability, statistics, and mathematical thought
  • Demonstrate the ability to read, understand, design, implement, and test algorithms analytically and in a programming language
