Salary Ranges

Salary ranges vary considerably, because a major in sociology, criminology, or social work can be applied to careers in social services, criminal justice, business, education, etc., and because public and private sector jobs pay differently. 

  • Starting salaries for people with a B.A. in the social work field are approximately $30,000 and are higher in school or court settings.
  • School social workers with master's degrees generally have starting salaries of approximately $45,000. Advanced salaries can range in school social work and court social work from $50-60,000.
  • Starting salaries for parole, probation, county and federal jobs in the criminal justice field for people with a B.A. are approximately $35,000 to $45,000.
  • With a master's in social work, entry-level salaries in the public sector are approximately $40,000 to $55,000, and higher in the private sector.
  • A person with a master's degree in sociology/criminology working within a state agency can start at $55,000.
  • In the private research or government sectors, employees with a master's degree in sociology or criminology can earn $60,000 and up.
  • Salaries in the administrative correctional system at the state and federal level that require experience and advanced education are approximately $60,000 or more.
