Mr. Joseph Gehring, Band Director and Assistant Conductor of the Immaculata Symphony, is an active conductor, pianist, and educator. Currently he is the Band Director at Immaculata University, where he also teaches Brass Methods and Advanced Conducting. He has been the Assistant Conductor of the Immaculata Symphony since 2004 and has planned some exciting concerts with several unique collaborations. During his time as Assistant Conductor, he has developed multiple interactive youth programs with a focus on music education for all ages, some of which included “Symphony at the Circus” and “Adventures in Music”. With an interest in promoting new music as well as cherishing the music of the past, Mr. Gehring strives to create programs with all of his ensembles that represent outstanding music covering many different genres.
In addition to his teaching and conducting responsibilities at Immaculata University, Mr. Gehring is also the Band Director at the Renaissance Academy where he directs the Elementary, Middle, and High School Bands. For the past 8 years he has also been the Music Director and Conductor of the West Chester Band, and has been the Assistant Conductor for the Chester County Pops Orchestra since its inception in 2005. These ensembles help to complete the full spectrum of musicians that he has the pleasure of working with, from every age and ability level. Mr. Gehring is also a frequent guest conductor of various honor/festival bands and orchestras throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware, including the Southern Chester County Honors Band, Philadelphia Archdiocesan Honors String Orchestra, PMEA District 12 Elementary Honors Band Fest, Kent County Junior High Honors Band, and the ASTA Junior High String Festival Orchestra.
As a pianist, Mr. Gehring has been the Director of Music Ministries at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Exton, PA since 2004 where he serves as organist/pianist, contemporary worship leader, and choir director. He is also the accompanist for the Brandywine Singers in West Chester, and has maintained a piano studio for beginning to advanced students of all ages for 15 years.
Mr. Gehring completed his undergraduate degree in Music Education at West Chester University, studying both piano and tuba. He continued his postgraduate work at Boston University and returned to WCU to study conducting with Dr. Ovidiu Marinescu. He recently earned a Master of Music Performance degree in Orchestral Conducting.
