The Chemistry Department offers a variety of programs to meet the academic needs and varied interests of students. The programs were designed to provide academic rigor in the study of chemistry, fulfill the liberal arts requirements of Immaculata, and allow students to pursue studies in areas that are of interest to them.
Scholarships are available for community college students interested in a bachelor's degree in chemistry. For more information, please visit Immaculata's STEM Scholars Program.
The department offers a B.S. and a B.A. in chemistry that meet the needs of students who are looking to pursue careers in research and industry, undertake graduate studies, or seek admission to a professional school. Students have the option of taking a double major, culminating in a B.A. degree in chemistry and a B.A. degree in biology. Students who want to be chemists but work in more non-traditional jobs should consider the B.A. in chemistry with a minor in either business or information technology. These degree programs would be the choice for students who want to work in such areas as pharmaceutical sales, computer modeling, scientific writing, and protocol/policy review.
Students who wish to become high school chemistry teachers should pursue the B.A. in chemistry with secondary education certification. This program provides students with a rigorous background in chemistry along with the required education courses to meet the certification requirements in the state of Pennsylvania and to prepare them to take the PRAXIS exams.
Those students who have an interest in chemistry, but are taking another major, are encouraged to pursue the minor in chemistry. The minor in chemistry is a popular option taken by biology and mathematics majors. Having the minor in chemistry broadens students' background and makes them more marketable upon graduation.
Below are links to each of the programs the Chemistry Department offers. When you click on a specific program, you will see a course sequence sheet that lists the courses to be taken in each semester of each year. A more detailed description of each course can be found in the Immaculata University catalog.
