Transitioning to college poses a unique set of challenges and opportunities.
FYE assists in that adjustment through classroom discussions, service learning projects and large group activities. FYE is a mandatory one-credit course designed to help students successfully navigate the college system while growing both educationally and personally.
The FYE course explores a variety of topics including:
In addition to classroom discussions, students will participate in large group activities that will enhance their understanding of Immaculata’s mission and values. Students are required to attend two large group activities on-campus during the semester. The first of these activities includes a presentation by Head’s Up and the Philadelphia Police Department regarding the devastating effects of drug usage. The second activity will include a panel discussion from various individuals in the local community currently working with the underprivileged populations. Both of these presentations have relevant connections to this year’s book selection for the Common Reading Program.
In partnership with City Year of Greater Philadelphia, all incoming first-year students will participate in FYE Serves (service learning project) during New Student Orientation. In an effort to revitalize the Cobbs Creek Recreation Center and Laura Sims Skate House, all students will engage in a one-day service learning project by painting murals and landscaping the gardens. By beautifying this recreational center, Immaculata students will be making Cobbs Creek a cleaner and safer place for the children of Philadelphia. FYE Serves not only allows students to gain a sense of responsibility for their community, but also allows them to become connected with the Immaculata family and establish long-lasting friendships.
Immaculata University is a Catholic, comprehensive, coeducational institution founded by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
