London and Paris
May 23 – June 3, 2012

Offered by the Education and English Departments as a three-credit elective.

You head east, into a short night, and suddenly it’s morning and you’re in England – the hub and focus for theatre-goers worldwide!  Red, double-decker buses groan along the “wrong” side of the road, escorted by innumerable black taxicabs with engines that sound like sewing machines!

You will enjoy some free time in London where you might like to explore the endless list of museums, the Tower of London, or the stomping grounds of Eliza Dolittle and Professor Higgins.  You will enjoy a guided tour of the sights and sounds of the British capital.  See Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the multi-cultural area of Soho, Oxford Street (home to the major shopping district), #10 Downing Street and the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, if scheduled.  There will also be optional choices such as a short train trip to Windsor, the location of royal residences for almost a thousand years,  a performance at a West End theatre, or perhaps a Thames cruise to Greenwich, or how about a ride on the London eye, the world’s highest Ferris wheel!

Then on Day 7: On to Paris!

Board the high-speed Eurostar train in London for an exciting ride under the English Channel, through the "Chunnel." Arrive in downtown Paris less than three hours later!  Settle into your centrally-located hotel, then set out to explore one of the world's most beautiful capital cities.

You will have free time to head to Montmartre, Paris' highest hill and its most celebrated bohemian district. Artists still flock to the charming Place du Tertre, as they did when Toulouse-Lautrec painted the French Cancan dancers at the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret. Enjoy panoramic views of the city as you make your way to the Sacré-Coeur, the white-domed basilica that anchors the Parisian skyline or enjoy a show at the Moulin Rouge.  Check out Rue Cler, a pedestrian-only street lined with shops that are quintessentially French. There will be a guided half-day city sightseeing where you will set out on a coach tour of the city. On the Right Bank of the River Seine, see Napoléon's Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Elysées, the Place de la Concorde, and the exuberant Opéra Garnier. On the Left Bank, you'll see the Eiffel Tower, the Invalides, the Latin Quarter and Saint-Germain-des-Prés.  You can also plan a visit to the Pere Lachaise Cemetery and its illustrious residents including Jim Morrison of the Doors!

There will be an optional excursion to the Loire Valley where you can visit famous castles.
