PHILADELPHIA - Immaculata University (IU) is regarded as the birthplace of modern college women’s basketball and IU’s Mighty Macs have the Waterford Crystal championship trophies to prove it.
But why stop with three trophies (as in National Championship trophies for wins in 1972, 1973 and 1974) when you can also boast a feature film that will open nationwide in October?
The World Premiere of THE MIGHTY MACS, movie, which chronicles Immaculata’s legendary women’s basketball team, will be held on Friday, October 14, 2011 at 7 p.m. at the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall and Commonwealth Plaza in Philadelphia, Pa. Tickets are $150 per person.
Scheduled to appear at the premiere will be the movie’s stars Carla Gugino (Entourage, Sucker Punch, Race to Witch Mountain, Watchmen), David Boreanaz (Bones, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn (Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, The Exorcist, Same Time Next Year) as well as the film’s director Tim Chambers.
Also attending the premiere will be former Mighty Macs Women’s Head Basketball Coach Cathy Rush, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008, and Theresa Shank Grentz, the 1992 U.S. Olympic coach. Grentz is also the former head women’s basketball coach at The University of Illinois and Rutgers University (1982 national champions). Other members of the championship teams participating in the festivities include Marianne Crawford Stanley, former head women’s basketball coach at Old Dominion, whose teams won three national championships in 1979, 1980 and 1985.
After the movie premiere, celebrate the Mighty Macs at a 70s disco party until the early morning hours in the Kimmel Center’s Commonwealth Plaza.
The Kimmel Center is located at 300 South Broad Street, in Philadelphia, Pa.
