Credit for Prior Learning
IU recognizes that many adult learners have accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Academic progress may be accelerated by earning college credit for learning that has resulted from life experiences.
The University uses a variety of ways to translate non-college learning experience into college credit. These options include:
- Tested CPL
- Challenge Exams may be taken in selected courses at Immaculata for a non-refundable $75 fee.
- Credits earned for CLEP, DANTES and ACT-PEP will be transcripted for a fee of $10/credit.
- Technical and Professional Training (TPT) reviewed by academic bodies. A fee of $10/credit is charged for transcription of credit in this category.
- TPT needing review by appropriate IU faculty. A fee of $10/credit is charged for transcription.
- Life Learning Paper (LLP). A fee of $35/credit is charged for this type of CPL review.
Categories 3 and 4 must be:
- Documented learning, not merely experience or exposure
- College-level learning
- Unrecognized learning, not transcripted by a prior college or university
Applying for CPL early in a student’s program allows for more accuracy in planning for the completion of the degree.
