Teacher and student playing guitarsThe Graduate Music Therapy Department offers programs reflecting a commitment to providing a unique educational experience for persons interested in establishing or advancing a professional career in music therapy. The Master of Arts programs prepare students to practice music therapy at an advanced level, with a special emphasis on music-centered psychotherapy.

Two programs are offered:
 

The 60 credit MA provides a comprehensive program of education and training for students who have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g. music, music education, psychology, etc.) and wish to become Board Certified Music Therapists (MT-BC).

The 48-credit MA provides advanced theoretical, clinical and musical knowledge and skills for those who already have the MT-BC credential and wish to develop advanced clinical practice skills, with a special emphasis on music-centered psychotherapy.

Program highlights include:
  • Focus on clinical improvisation, use of songs, and music and imagery.
  • Client assessment in music therapy
  • Advanced verbal skills for music therapy
  • Supervision of clinical practice, at an advanced level
  • A mentorship model. Students work closely with faculty; we walk each step of the education and training process with you.
  • Clinical supervision, at an advanced level
  • Comprehensive music skills development
  • Courses offered during evenings and intensive, distance-learning format
  • Faculty draw upon extensive, in-depth knowledge of clinical practice
  • Periodically, nationally and internationally recognised guest speakers present current topics in music therapy
Immaculata University has a long tradition of preparing students for careers as music therapists, nurses, and mental health clinicians in a variety of institutions, organizations, and agencies dedicated to the educational, vocational, social, physical and psychological development of the person.
