Immaculata University 2013 Commencement
Congratulations 2013 Graduates!
Jamie Moyer Named Commencement Speaker
Jamie Moyer, former Philadelphia Phillies baseball player, father, teacher and philanthropist, will deliver IU’s commencement address at the ceremonies on campus on May 19. Moyer will receive an honorary doctorate of laws from Immaculata. Moyer, through his Moyer Foundation founded in 2000, is dedicated to providing comfort and support to children enduring a time of profound physical, emotional or financial distress. With the community’s support, the Moyer Foundation has raised more than $20 million to support over 225 different programs that directly serve the needs of children in distress. The father of eight children, he and his wife, Karen, teach their children the importance of charitable service by having them work at shelters and through mission trips to Guatemala and Africa.
Regarding his professional career, Moyer has continued to show that “age” doesn’t hinder your goals in life. He continued to be a pitcher in the major leagues late into his 40s. At the time of his last game (in May 2012), he was the oldest player in the major leagues and had the most wins, losses, and strikeouts of any active major league pitcher. On April 17, 2012, Moyer became the oldest pitcher in MLB history to win a game. On May 16, 2012, he broke his own winning-pitcher record and also set the record for the oldest major-league player to record an RBI.
Pacholczyk to Receive Immaculata Medal
Rev. Tadeusz (Tad) Pacholczyk, Ph.D., director of education at the National Catholic Bioethics Center, will be awarded the Immaculata Medal at commencement ceremonies in May. The Immaculata Medal, offered for the first time in 1976, has been bestowed over the years on men and women who have publicly exercised creative leadership or given evidence of sound scholarship in the arts, letters, sciences, or professions or served the University in an extraordinary manner.
Father Pacholczyk’s scientific and theological background makes him a well-known and respected speaker on the ethical and scientific issues related to the hot topic of stem cell research. Through his dynamic leadership, many people have benefited from his concise explanations of the advancements in as well as the moral implications of stem cell research.
