    Constitution Day 2017
"Breaking the News: Why America Needs (and Dislikes) a Free Press"

Dr. Joshua Weikert, associate faculty in political science

The First Amendment guarantees a range of freedoms that are deemed essential to a functioning democracy. Four of these are innately personal, so why, then, does the list include a private and usually (even in 1787) for-profit institution?  This presentation will discuss the role and limitations of the media in American politics, allegations of bias, public hostility to the media, and the reasons we need a free press more than ever before in our history.

Constitution Day (also known as Constitution and Citizenship Day) was first designated by Congress in 1952 and is observed each year to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on September 17, 1787.  In 2004, “Congress required all educational institutions that receive Federal funding to hold an educational program pertaining to the Constitution… to mark the day” (Department of Education).

All attendees will receive a free copy of the U.S. Constitution.
