Observation and Student Teaching for Undergraduate Education Majors

Classroom Observation

Sophomores and first-semester juniors observe and participate in the classroom setting for one morning each week. Traditional undergraduates in the College of Undergraduate Studies are placed in a different setting each semester. Second-semester juniors spend one day a week in the same classroom setting in which they will have their student teaching experience in the fall of senior year. This preliminary experience is guided and directed by the University's staff in conjunction with the principals and teachers of the participating schools. Students are responsible for their own transportation.

Adult undergraduates in the College of LifeLong Learning can choose an observation site according to their schedules. The director of student teaching is available to provide suggestions for observation sites. Proper documentation of observation hours is required. Please visit the Education Division for the necessary forms.

Student Teaching

All undergraduate students complete a 12-credit, 14-week student-teaching experience. Student-teachers participate in a weekly seminar conducted by University staff. Through lectures and discussions led by local school personnel, student-teachers become familiar with their professional obligations and benefits. The director of student teaching is responsible for coordinating the student-teaching seminars held throughout the semester. Topics include mandated reporting, resume writing, technology integration, legal issues affecting teachers and school districts, Pennsylvania standards and anchors, and the certification process.

Special education majors are required to complete a 30-hour field experience during EDU 383 or a 40-hour field experience during SPED 389 (typically taken the second semester of senior year).
