Qualities of Music Therapists

Music Therapy session

What qualities do music therapists have?

Students who come into our music therapy program are typically musicians who want to combine their love of music with a desire to help others.

  • Being a competent musician is important. During your training you develop guitar, piano and singing skills in a range of styles such as rock, folk, country, oldies, and kids’ songs.
  • Being in good mental and physical health is also important. This means creatively adapting to different settings and people, being open to supervision and feedback, and having the emotional fortitude to “be there” for someone. The best therapists are often those who have used music to help or heal themselves—they know first-hand what it’s like to use music therapeutically, and what it’s like to overcome life’s challenges.
