Expectations of Tutees during Tutoring

Be Prepared.  Be On Time.  Be Courteous.

Attendance and Basic Courtesy

  1. Attend all scheduled meetings with your tutor.
  2. If you cannot make a scheduled session, please inform your tutor beforehand so that they can make note of your efforts and reschedule your session with you.
  3. At your first tutoring session, make sure to exchange contact information (room extensions, cell number, and email) and keep it somewhere accessible so that you can notify your tutor if you need to cancel an appointment.

Student Preparation for Tutoring Sessions*

  1. Come to each session prepared for tutoring.
  2. If you are working on an assignment that requires reading, do the reading beforehand.
  3. For Written assignments, have some ideas written down before you meet with your tutor.
  4. Think through all of the areas that you are having problems with and prepare of list of questions that you need answered.

* Tutors are instructed to terminate meetings with students who are not properly prepared for their tutoring sessions. *

Length of tutoring sessions

  1. Tutoring sessions should seldom exceed 1-2 hours. 
  2. Use your tutoring time productively.
  3. Though sometimes it is necessary to start tutoring sessions with informal conversations, avoid letting it consume your time.
  4. Tutoring sessions should not take place in dormitory rooms.  Use the library, classrooms, laboratories, etc. to keep the focus on learning the material.

Developing Learning Skills

  1. It is a good idea to take your notebook with you to each tutoring session so that you can show your tutor how you take notes.
  2. Use the tutoring time to solve the “problems behind the problems”.
  3. Be open to suggestions your tutor makes. 
  4. Be willing to consider new ways, new approaches, and new viewpoints.

Learning Responsibility

  1. You are always responsible for your own learning.
  2. Do not become dependent on your tutor.
  3. The primary role of the tutor is to help you to learn by yourself.
  4. Always be ready to exchange ideas, to allow others to see your work, and to consider new suggestions.
  5. Do not expect anyone else, especially your tutor, to do your work for you.

Locate Your Problems Honestly

  1. Do not be afraid to make a mistake and to show your mistakes to others.
  2. When you hide your weaknesses, you frustrate your own growth (and drive your tutor crazy).
  3. An essential step of learning is identifying your own weaknesses and then to develop step by step strategies to overcome them.

Personality Clashes

  1. Once in awhile, people simply are not comfortable with each other.
  2. If you and your tutor do not communicate well or problems arise, you can switch to a different tutor.

Be Nice

  1. Remember that your tutor is doing you a favor. 
  2. Remember that your tutor is also a student and at times can be under heavy academic pressure.
  3. Be understanding.
  4. Treat your tutor the same way that you would wish to be treated by them.
