Mission

If you are looking for a department with strong programs that provide for the development of musical talent and exciting performance opportunities for each student, Immaculata's Music Department may be just for you. Since its founding in 1920, Immaculata has held music as an important academic discipline among the liberal arts and has retained its prominence as a performing art. Through the years, music has also attained a distinctive place in roles of service within the professional fields, especially of music education, music therapy and liturgical music. At Immaculata, however, music is not merely an academic discipline or career choice; it has become part of the fabric of university life.

As part of its identity within the Catholic-Christian university environment, the philosophy of the department is rooted in the belief that music is fundamental to the wholeness of the human person and serves, as well, the good of all humankind. In its commitment to excellence within the professional fields, the department meets every standard of membership in the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) and certification by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). This dual foundation underlies the success of students in achieving high levels of artistic performance and skill development in preparation for successful careers. It has also allowed for contributions to the university and beyond which are invaluable to the life and culture of our time.

With the experience of music at Immaculata, the graduate will leave Immaculata prepared, for example, for a career in music therapy, music education, liturgical music, music and technology, instrumental or choral conducting, or music and the music business. If choosing, the graduate will also be prepared to move immediately into graduate study.
