History, Politics, International Studies
There are two dominant features of the major in History, Politics, and International Studies. First, the major moves student through a carefully considered sequence of required core courses. Successive courses both provide the student with the opportunity to develop empirical knowledge about different historical periods an to add new intellectual skills. The capstone experience for seniors is the year-long senior seminar in which they define a research project, conduct research, and write a substantial thesis. Second, like English Literature, History is a reading and writing-intensive discipline.
The department faculty believes strongly in the value of independent research, study abroad, and first-rate internships as transformative experiences for undergraduates. Each year the department awards the Claire Schultz Prize for the best undergraduate thesis. In recent years, students in the department have found the means to study in Germany, Austria, England, and Greece. Department students have held internships at local law offices, the office of the Chester County Commissioners, the juvenile parole office of Chester County, the Valley Forge National Historical Park, the Foreign Policy Research Institute, the archaeological museum of the University of Pennsylvania, the narcotics division of the office of the District Attorney in Philadelphia, and the Smithsonian Institution.
Public Policy
The program in Public Policy is designed to meet the needs of those interested in careers where government, business, the media, and social services meet and overlap. This new interdisciplinary program fosters a high level of technical competence, a familiarity with the scholarship on public issues, and an awareness of practical political factors as they bear on policy decisions. The program combines theory, case studies, and historical analysis to see how particular issues reach the government agenda, how public policy on such issues is shaped, and what impact policies actually have on the problems. The program includes an internship experience and a year-long seminar on emerging public policy issues.
