Phil Martelli
Men’s basketball coach for Saint Joseph’s University
Commencement Speaker and
Honorary Degree Recipient (Doctor of Humane Letters)
 
            With a career coaching record of 261-152, Coach Martelli has led the St. Joe’s Hawks to 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT), which are the most in St. Joe’s history.   During the 2003-2004 season, the Hawks went undefeated in the regular season and earned the #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament – advancing to the Elite Eight. Aside from his coaching accomplishments, Coach Martelli is extremely active in the community. He is one of the leaders in the Coaches vs. Cancer annual fundraiser and was named the 2004 “Citizen of the Year” by the March of Dimes. He was inducted into the CYO Hall of Fame and was honored by the National Adoption Center.
 
 
 
Christine Beck
President, The Gesu School
Recipient of the Immaculata Medal
 
            Since 2003, Christine Beck has served as president and CEO of The Gesu School. Under her leadership, several building and renovation projects have been completed. For ten years she served as chairman of the board of Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education and was co-founder of Philadelphia’s National Junior Tennis League. During this time, Ms. Beck held numerous leadership and committee positions within the United States Tennis Association and the Middle States Tennis Association. During her career, she has received several national and regional awards including the Special Merit Award for Women (presented by the International Tennis Hall of Fame), The Kennedy Award for contribution to social progress of young people, the Jimmy Carter Hammer Award (presented by the former president on behalf of Habitat for Humanity), and Take the Lead Award from the Girl Scouts of Greater Philadelphia, among other recognitions.
